Background of the Study
Indigenous storytelling traditions in Afikpo North have long served as a vital means of transmitting cultural knowledge, history, and values. These oral narratives, steeped in symbolism and communal wisdom, are facing a decline as modern media and formal education systems increasingly overshadow traditional practices (Ezenwa, 2023). The shift towards digital entertainment and standardized curricula has resulted in reduced engagement with age-old storytelling methods, risking the loss of indigenous narratives that define community identity (Onyema, 2024). Moreover, globalization and urban migration have led to generational gaps in the appreciation and practice of traditional storytelling (Nwosu, 2025). This study aims to document the current status of indigenous storytelling, analyze the factors contributing to its decline, and explore the socio-cultural implications of this cultural erosion. It further examines potential strategies for revitalizing storytelling traditions to ensure the continuity of indigenous heritage in Afikpo North.
Statement of the Problem
The decline of indigenous storytelling traditions in Afikpo North is leading to the erosion of cultural heritage and loss of historical narratives. Modern influences and changing educational priorities have marginalized traditional storytelling, creating a disconnect between generations. The absence of systematic efforts to document and revitalize these practices threatens the continuity of indigenous knowledge. This study seeks to identify the causes of this decline and propose measures to preserve and promote traditional storytelling as a means of cultural expression (Nwosu, 2025).
